Remembrance Day

Our District has been invited by The Mayor of Southampton to attend the Remembrance Day Service, at The Cenotaph, on Sunday 8th November 2015.

It is hoped that we can make up a contingent comprising, a Beaver, a Cub and a Scout and Explorer and a Scouter from every group in the district. Also all Active Support and Network members are invited.

Our aim is to have a good smart contingent for the remembrance parade at the Cenotaph in West Park Southampton for this year’s Remembrance Service. Last year was a lovely event and it gave our young people a chance to show their respect and remembrance and it was particularly mentioned by those attending, including the Mayor, that it was lovely to see our youngsters taking part.

Of course if your group has already arranged to go to your local church that is fine I am just pleased that they are doing that. But for those groups that do not go to a local church we would like you to join us at the main Southampton Cenotaph.

We hope we will have at least 50 people attending. Even though I have said only one please do bring more if you wish to.

We will meet at 9.45am at Guildhall Square I will be there earlier, so please look out for me. You can park for free up to 12 noon on a Sunday at the West Park Car Park.

Please do make sure you are all in smart uniform please, polished shoes etc. I will have poppies to give you if you have not already purchased some.

The parade will be marching from Guildhall Square to the cenotaph and back to Guildhall square after the service so Parents please come and see the parade and pick up your children from guildhall square just before 12 noon.

A Grand Day Out for Active Support

On Wednesday 5th August 12 members of the ASU enjoyed a “Grand Day Out” Having collected everyone from home we were on our way by 10 a.m. First stop for morning refreshment and a walk round the shops was Lyndhurst. unfortunately at this point the weather decided to rain on us.Then it was back to the minibus and down to Christchurch where everyone had time to do as they please as well as have lunch.Some decided to visit the shops, some to visit the Priory,and some were adventurous enough to hire a boat on the river and the sun shone on us all the time…

We met up again at 2 30 p.m. for the return journey stopping off at The Station Tea Rooms at Holmsley for a cream tea.This was a treat from one of our late members,Doreen Old who had bequeathed that we should “Do something nice” in her memory, and we toasted her with a cup of tea.We then made the return to Southampton dropping everyone of around 4,30.p.m. It was agreed by all that we had a very enjoyable day.

Our thanks go to Mansell Park Primary School for the use of their excellent minibus and to our D.C. Colin Floyd, for not only arranging the use of the minibus but delivering it to me and collecting me afterwards. Cant wait to do it all again sometime!!

Brownsea Island 2015

Elaine reports on the May 2015 Beavers trip to Brownsea Island…

The day began at 8:30 when we boarded the coach for the journey to Sandbanks. On arrival at Sandbanks the very excited but  well behaved Beavers walked the 5 min journey to the ferry, The short journey on the ferry was spent pointing out different landmarks that could possibly be Brownsea Island.

On arrival at Brownsea Island we all went round together, taking in the breathtaking views and looking out for animals such as the Red Squirrel.

We were given a talk at ‘St Marks Church’ by one of the amazing volunteers, the Beavers were in awe listening to her, she then sent them on a hunt in the church to find the ‘Kneeler’ that had been made by our Southampton City Active support Ladies.

Later we went down to the beach where the beavers had a great time playing in the sand.  Then we walked back up to ‘Horse field’ where we had lunch, the Beavers were fascinated  when a visitor ‘A Peacock’ came to join them for lunch.

After lunch we walked round to ‘The Trading Post’ where we took group photos, then walked up to the Scout stone where we renewed our Scout Promise and the Beavers were all presented with a Brownsea island woggle.

We then carried on walking round the Island to the wonderful play area that has been created from trees that have either fallen or been felled on the Island.

The day finished with a gentle walk past the reed beds back to meet the ferry for our return journey home.

District Commissioner Blog – April and May 2015

Well at long last the summer weather looks to be here even though Kent has just had an Earthquake!! That means we can get our young people out and about and enjoy Wilverley and our nearby scouting activity centre’s and the New Forest. We are so lucky to have such a wide range of opportunities on our door step. For those of you planning a camp can I please prompt you to send me well in advance your nights away notification form and a full list of anyone over the age of 18 years old going on the camp. We must insure the records are correct and our safe guarding measures are upheld.

I had a wonderful evening with our members of SSAGO with a ball on a boat. This was organized by the SSAGO members in Southampton inviting other members from all over the UK. It was a wonderful dinner and a great time was had by me and all those that attended. Thank you for inviting me.

We had a great weekend again at Biblins in the Wye Valley for the scout Explorer and Network activity camp. A huge thank you goes to Ian Budd who yet again organized this event with ease and great efficiency. The young people climbed, walked, floated, and aimed and had a wonderful time. This weekend has always has been the highlight of my own scouting and long may it continue.

It is with great regret that it was decided at the last moment that we best not hold our St Georges Day Parade this year. The Centre of the City was closed off due to some crazy people wanting to run not walk. That made it impossible for us to hold our event safely and easily. Fortunately the 29th, 2nd and 1st Scout Groups assisted the race by volunteering to be marshalls and man the water stops. This was a great opportunity to again see scouting helping in the community. I have received several letters and emails from some of the runners saying how grateful they are to the scouts for helping and what a great encouragement they were. Well done to those that helped you did us proud.

The AGM season is upon us and so far I have attended the 1st, 9th and 14th AGM’s which have been wonderful events and well supported by the parents and everyone in the groups. Well done these formal meetings are a great way of shouting load how good we are and to also ask for more Parents to give us a helping hand.

The District AGM is being held on the 2nd July at 7.30pm at the 11th Scout HQ Kentish Road. I hope you can ALL come and join us for the evening and celebrate our scouting. We don’t often all get together so this year let’s try and get a full house. Please bring a dirty car the young people going on international trips are still fund raising and they will clean your car and you can buy a burger.

Don’t forget to ask for more adult volunteers, we have a Southampton City wide adult recruitment page if you have anyone at all who would like to get involved in our scouting please refer them to southamptonscouts.org.uk that will tell them of a range of different opportunities to join us and our adventure!!

We will be launching very soon a District Youth Council. I have asked Mike Langford and Heather Porter our new District Network Commissioners to help me by leading on this initiative. They will be guided by Keiran Brackley Ben Hibbert and Taylor Watson who are all young leaders. In partnership with Stuart Ganney and Dave Bowers on behalf of the scout and explorer sections. The format will be to invite two scouts from each group and two explorers from each unit to form the District youth Council. We will be asking for nominations soon. It will be wonderful to ask the representatives to help us shape our scouting going forward. Look out for more details soon.

We are also looking to recruit more adults to help us with the Tuesday morning maintenance team at Wilverley. If you know of anyone who would like to get involved please ask them to contact me or Laura Dyer the camp Site Manager. We would love to hear from them.

Recently I asked the District to look for the next DC as I would like to stand down in July next year. My thoughts were it would be a great help to me if the appointment was made now and they could help me in my last year. Several people were suggested as being well placed to take on the challenge but to date no one has put themselves forward. So be it, no worries I will crack on for my final year in my own peculiar way and see what we can achieve for our scouting.

I will be reviewing my position over the summer and will update you later on what the long term plan for the district management will be in the future.

Southampton City AGM and BBQ – 2nd July

Southampton City Scout Council invites you to a celebration of another year of Southampton Scouting in 2014/15 with our AGM and a BBQ

Thursday 2nd July 2015 and the 11th Scout HQ in Kentish Road Freemantle SO15 3GX @ 7.30pm

There is also a great opportunity to get your car cleaned by Rozy, Owen and Kieran who are raising the money required to go to Japan and Tanzania and Iceland. Please support them by bringing your grubby car!

SS Shieldhall: Habour Training Day – June

There are two exciting opportunities taking place on the preserved historic ship, the SS Shieldhall, loacted at Southampton Docks.

On Saturday the 6th of June, there will be six instructions sessions aboard the ship, including topics such as the Deck, On Bridge and the Engine Room.

A further opportunity is on Sunday the 28th, allowing participants to undertake a short sea voyage and to learn about the skills and disciplines necessary on such a vessel.

Southampton City Network at Isle of Wight Revolution

Over the Easter weekend 11 intrepid Network members headed off to the Isle of Wight for Revolution, an annual Network and Explorer camp. As ever, the programme boasted an excellent range of activities during the day and a whole bunch of evening entertainment, and it did not disappoint.

Our camp started on Thursday. After the obligatory ferry to the island (with four investitures on the sail over), setting up our incredibly orange mess tent and a trip to the supermarket we were ready to go. Revolution starts with an opening ceremony where each group is personally welcomed onto the camp. After the ceremony the evening welcome party started. We donned our finest fancy dress on a ‘famous fives’ theme (a 5 a side football team and the Scooby Doo gang) and headed on over.The evening was completed by a rousing evening of songs around the fire.
Friday saw a very adrenaline filled day with shooting, archery, hovercraft driving and rage buggies. Our shooting practice paid off (thanks Andy!) with some great shots over the morning but archery was a bit more variable. Hovercraft driving was great fun and involved charging around a field trying and generally failing to navigate around a course of poles. Then there were rage buggies which really gave everyone the chance to kick up some mud and get sliding around corners. There was a slightly terrifying moment where Oli tried to run us over and then promptly destroyed the finish line – rightly so, that made the morning newsletter the next day! The evening was topped off with the disco and fire.
Saturday morning started off with a very chilly dip in the sea during sea kayaking. After a paddle out from shore everyone surfed back in and climbed up a steep shingle bank, only to slide back down it into the sea a few minutes later. After drying off and warming up it was time to get off to a sea shanty workshop. I think it’s fair to say that we were a bit suspicious of this activity after last year’s run in with the overly complex modern jive. Sea shanties turned out to be much more manageable and we learnt a group dance that we had the chance to do later on in the evening with the whole camp. Finally, it was off to zorbing. Sadly it was just too windy to safely zorb so we got to play with an auto belaying climbing wall (can you do it without your feet?) and had another, more successful go at archery – practice makes perfect! After dinner we took part in family fortunes and did absolutely abysmally. Time for the traditional evening campfire!
Sunday was the last day of activities, the first of which was an aerobics session (read: lie in). That was followed by an hour in the pool with their ‘underwater treasure hunt’ activity which involved lots of incredibly perplexing games that I’m certain nobody knew the rules for. After that we headed off to the much anticipated ‘Head Hunters’ – a giant game of laser tag capture the flag set in a forest. Our team defended our base well but sadly lost – we’re blaming the explorers in our team who kept shooting each other! We returned to camp for the closing ceremony which included the obligatory task of fitting the whole camp into one photograph. We had one last disco where we accidentally started a conga and then headed off for one last chance for a truly Network style camp fire (throw 5 pallets on and retreat quickly).
On Monday morning we enjoyed one last bacon butty breakfast and packed up camp. Having seen a turret poking over the hedge we had a quick wander and found that there was a tank show going on next door. After bimbling around the show we headed off to the beach to enjoy a lazy afternoon in the sun before before returning to Southampton to be reunited with our showers! After such a great camp no doubt we’ll be back next year!

26th Swaythling Cubs visit London

26th Swaythling Cub Scouts were invited to join 2nd and 4th Newbury Cubs on their trip to London this March. 6 cubs and 3 leaders got up early that Saturday morning to catch the train. The Underground was an adventure. We arrived at the Science Museum 5 minutes early which was quite some feat! 

After the Science Museum we headed across to have our photos taken at 10 Downing St (where a mysterious man behind the door handed out postcards of Larry the cat for all). The behaviour of the cubs was impeccable – but then the guards were holding guns!
Onwards to The Lord Amory our scout ship hotel for the night and a well earned Macdonalds in Greenwich, walking back part of the way through the tunnel under the Thames.
After a cosy night and cooked breakfast it was on to The Imperial War Museum and a picnic lunch. After a friendly hat chase around the park it was a sad goodbye to our new friends before 26th squeezed in another Museum – The Natural History this time to say a farewell to Dippy the dinosaur who is soon to be replaced by a whale.
We were all exhausted by the time we got home. Akela was the only one who managed to get lost the whole trip (though she still maintains it was the others that got lost – she knew where she was the whole time!)
