The Chancellor today announced a share of £10 million funding will be awarded to The Scout Association to increase the opportunities available to young people, particularly in disadvantaged areas.
We are delighted that the work we’ve undertaken over the past 18 months in disadvantaged parts of the UK, recruiting 267 new volunteers and over 1,300 new young members, has been recognised and prioritised by the government.
We look forward to continuing to work closely with the Youth United Foundation – to whom the funding has been awarded – to improve the life chances of even more young people from some of the UK’s most challenged communities.
Investment from the Youth United Foundation previously has given Scouting the opportunity to extend its reach into six of England’s toughest neighbourhoods. Young people in these areas really benefit from Scouting as it gives them focus, drive and life skills.
83rd Oldham Cub Pack was one of the first Groups in England to receive a start up grant to help bring it back to the community, which has little offering for young people, after it folded in 1998. The money helped go towards uniforms, camping and sport kit.
Cub Scout Leader Gail Smith says ‘I love seeing their faces light up. Some of them have never gone on a holiday, never stayed away from home or been away from the estate. Scouting is broadening their horizons. They are really blossoming; increasing in confidence; becoming more outgoing and assertive.’
The Youth United Network is The Scout Association, Girlguiding, St John Ambulance, the Army Cadet Force, Sea Cadets, the Boys’ Brigade, the Girls’ Brigade, the Volunteer Police Cadets, the Fire Cadets and the RAF Air Cadets.
Voluntary Sector Navigator to support the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub
Southampton Voluntary Services has an excellent opportunity for the right individual to form part the team working within Southampton’s Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH)
MASH is the single point of contact for all safeguarding concerns regarding children and young people. It brings together in one place expert professionals, called “navigators”, from services that have contact with children, young people and families, and makes the best possible use of their combined knowledge to keep children safe from harm.
The post holder will work as part of the MASH, a dynamic multi-agency integrated team, that assesses notifications and referrals regarding children aged 0 – 18 with specific responsibility to ensure the engagement of the Voluntary Sector.
Initially this post is for a pilot period and subject to a fixed term 12 month contract. The working hours are: 22.5 hours per week and the salary is:– £24,000 pro rata.

Volunteer Development Worker
This is an exciting opportunity to join an established charity delivering support to the local voluntary sector in Southampton. The post holder will have the lead for supporting volunteer development locally through the delivery of the City’s nationally accredited Volunteer Centre. They will also have responsibility for supporting the charity itself in involving volunteers within its various projects and departments.
It is a permanent post. The working hours are: 37 hours per week andthe salary is: – £22,000 per annum.
The Volunteer Centre is integral part of the core work of the organisation and the post holder will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of its’ 5 core activities, which include;
- Brokering volunteering relationships between Southampton residents and local organisations
- Supporting a local voice for volunteering
- Developing and supporting good practice of those involving volunteers
- Developing local volunteering opportunities
- Strategic development of volunteering
Applicants will be flexible, highly motivated and able to work independently and as part of a wider team. With a strong background of working with volunteers, applicants should also have excellent communication and organisation skills with strong database and statistic analysis skills. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Youth organisations are set to receive a share of £10m to deliver social action opportunities to young people, the Chancellor has announced.

The money, taken from banks through Libor fines, will be used to support organisations belonging to the Youth United Network to organise and deliver social action programmes to young people.
During the Budget, George Osborne said: “I will continue to direct the use of the Libor fines to our military charities and our emergency services.
“Because the sums continue to grow, I can extend that support to our search and rescue and lifeboat services – and provide £10m of support to our Scouts, Guides, Cadets and St John Ambulance.”
Using Libor fines to fund military and emergency services charities was first announced in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement last December.
Rosie Thomas, director of the Youth United Foundation, the charity that supports the Youth United Network, has welcomed the announcement.
She said: “Social action is at the heart of what the Youth United Network does.
“From our volunteer first aiders to community clean-ups, the experiences they offer help young people to develop the skills, confidence and abilities they need to reach their full potential in life.
“This new funding will enable more young people to get involved with Scouts, Girlguiding, Cadets and Brigades groups, particularly in deprived areas.”
The Chancellor also announced plans to extend the apprenticeship grant by £85m each year over the next two years to encourage more employers to offer more vocational training opportunities to young people.
Councillor David Simmonds, chair of the Local Government Association’s children and young people board, welcomed the move but feels that more needs to be done to help young people into work.
He said: “Apprenticeship subsidies have been operating since 2012, but since that time the number of teenagers in apprenticeships have fallen.
“Whilst we recognise that creating more apprenticeships for young people will help to provide more jobs, this demonstrates that more must be done to tackle the issue, rather than putting more money into a system that is already struggling to meet the needs of young people.
“Councils need to have the opportunity to work with employers to create quality local apprenticeships that will help them to carry out their statutory duties successfully.”

Rozy’s Jamboree Adventure
The World Scout Jamboree is a gathering of tens of thousands of Scouts and Guides from almost every country in the world who, for ten days live together, experience each others cultures, take part in exciting activities and have an amazing adventure.
Southampton City Scout District are pleased to be have Rozy Toomer who has been selected by UK Contingent Committee to attend the 23rd World Scout Jambore held in Japan,
In the past Rozy has attended Scouts at the 9th and to date is a Young Leader and Explorer Scout within the District.
She will also join her brother Jake Toomer and Jason Ledwich who have been selected on to the Jamboree’s service team.
The Jamboree costs £2,995 to attend and Rozy has already started her fundraising and she has created a Blog for us to keep upto date with

Scouting & University Life
Former 25th Young Leader and Network member Alice Mintoff tell us about her University Adventure and that Scouting is still possible plus the skills she uses to tackle everyday life as a University Student!
Moving to uni is terrifying. It’s one of the scariest things I’ve ever done and that includes capsizing a kayak in the river Itchen. You really don’t know what your parents do for you until you’ve moved away and then get sick. It’s not something I regret doing though and it’s an adventure worth embarking on. Scouting has taught me various skills that have been quite useful and my multi tool was quite useful when fixing saucepans! I knew right off that I was going to get involved in Scouting whilst I was away and before I’d even got to Cardiff I’d found a pack that I could help out at and I knew about the SSAGO unit within the student union. To those who don’t know, SSAGO stands for student scouts and guide organisation, there are various groups at various universities up and down the county and we all meet up for 3 camps a year and one formal dance. I was fairly nervous about making new friends but after 1 meeting with Ssags – the Cardiff SSAGO group, I knew I’d found my people and from there making friends wasn’t so scary anymore. There are times when I seem to do more scouting things than Chemistry which is always worrying when I realise that my degree is in Chemistry and that I’ve actually got to pass but it’s always nice that there’s something else in my life to keep me busy. The great thing about scouting at university is that you can do as much or as little as you want because everyone understands that’s there’s a lot going on. Ssags provides a nice change to the volunteering side and we do all sorts, a recent favourite was our puddings and board games evening which we had during exam time. I can definitely recommend playing twister before you eat your body weight in trifle! Uni isn’t just about studying your chosen course, it’s about broadening your horizons and becoming you which scouting really does help with. In the interest of stopping with the clichés, I shall now stop talking! Hope the weather is good where you guys are! YiS Alice (:
I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce the newly revitalised Southampton City Network (you may know us as Ducks). For those of you who don’t know,
Network is the Scout section for 18 – 25 year olds, we’re a District based unit and meet wherever the activities take us – recently taking advantage of a few drier days in the New Forest.
Since the beginning of the year we’ve been getting stuck in to some serious scouting, a campfire with some backwoods cooking:

A ready steady cook evening, and an evening shooting at the 9th:
We’ve got big plans ahead, including a camp at Ferny Crofts on 14th – 16th March and an overnight expedition, there’s also been pub talk of an Explorer Belt expedition!
We’re an eager bunch of people trying to cram in as many activities as possible, and we’re always on the lookout for new members, to come along as often or as little as you want.
