As 2020 marks the start of a new decade. We thought it would be nice to look back at some photos of scouts in Southampton in previous decades. Here are over 80 photos of scouting in Southampton from the 50’s to the 70’s.
If you’d like to see more photos from the archives. Check out 2nd Southampton’s Flickr album.
Well folks here we are at the end of two weeks selling poppies. My grateful thanks go to all of the members of Active Support who did a “stint” at our stand in Sainsburys. Also my thanks go to Thelma Young, Kerry Budd, the 7th Cubs, the 26th Cubs, the 29th Cubs, the 11th Group and the 13th Group. You all did a great job. I have a running total of money collected until Friday evening, but I am going to keep you in suspense until I have the full total from British Legion. It will surprise you all !!!Thanks also to those members who joined me at the Cenotaph on Sunday morning and to the members of Network, Siobahn, Bailey and Henry who laid a wreath on behalf of the District. I think we all did a great job in showing Scouting supporting the community. Total amount collected for the Poppy Appeal will be circulated when I have it. Thank you all, George Longhurst.
Update:
Herewith the total collected for the Poppy Appeal, by the District on behalf of The British Legion. £7,869.25p (This includes money collected by the 13th Group at their church parade) My contact at British Legion tells me that this is a record amount collected on that site. Once again WELL DONE to everyone who took part.
Over the last few weeks the 11th cub scouts have been learning about the charity Kicks Counts and how they can use their rubbish to raise money for them.
Kicks Counts is a charity that was set up in 2009 and aims to reduce the stillbirth and neonatal death rate by raising awareness of baby movements. How important it is to be aware of movement in the womb.
One of the ways the Charity fundraises is by working with Terracyle.
Terracycle is a recycling company that has specialises in recycling typically hard-to-recycle waste. They offer people the opportunity to be collect certain waste and send it to them to be recycled. All products they collect are not recyclable by our regular council bin collection, so any items sent are saved from going into landfill. Terracycle clean and melt the waste into hard plastic that can be remoulded to make new recycled products.
For example: confectionary wrappers, milk bottle tops, biscuit and cake wrappers, dental products, cat food pouches, bread bags, crisp packets, baby food pouches and stamps.
The cubs collected all their items together in the hall. This all had to be sorted into categories. So each Six was given an item to collect from the pile – some of these had to be flattened out, others had to checked and cleaned.
Once sorted the items had to be bagged up and taken to the collection point in Millbrook.
It’s the time in the year when we recognise adults in the district that have given outstanding service over the years in differing ways.
A massive congratulations and well done to those listed here for their input and achievements. These will be presented to the individuals over the coming weeks.

Unfortunately the St Georges Day event for this year, 2019, has had to be cancelled The district team worked on this for some time following the feedback from the sections but no suitable venue could be found. Thanks to all those involved in the process this year. We hope that we have something in place for 2020.
On a cold night in March, Sue Budd, Kerry Budd and Veronica Radford attended the 11th Pack night to present Finley with the Lee Budd Award for “Outstanding Endeavour”. This is only the second time this award has been presented as the recipients have to overcome extreme adversity.
He is an outstanding Cub Scout who has persevered and continues to conquer his fears and problems in everyday life. He enjoys his cub experiences (park nights, outings and camps) and has benefited in many ways from all the new and exciting experiences cubs has offered him during his Scouting Adventure.
