Karen Shillabeer – Gone Home

Karen Shillabeer – Gone Home – Friday 24th of November 2017

It’s with great sadness to inform you all that Karen Shillabeer, who was the Beaver Scout Leader at the 29th Immaculata Scout Group for many years during the 2000’s before moving to Falmouth which was her dream, sadly died after a long illness in a hospice in Falmouth on Friday.

Karen continued her Scouting in Falmouth and joined the 6th Falmouth Sea Scouts, when she then moved section to become their Cub Scout Leader, although Karen became KAA instead of Akela.

Karen will now be able to meet up with Ian, her late husband, and our thoughts and prayers are with their children Ashley and Kristian who now find themselves without a Mum or Dad.

Yours in Scouting

Russ Andrews.
29th Immaculata Group Scout Leader.

Cenotaph and Poppies

Thank you to those of you who joined the parade at the Cenotaph on Sunday morning, especially as it was so cold and breezy. We were a small group but I know our presence was appreciated by the public by the amount of applause we received in the march past.

A special mention for the four Beaver Scouts who joined us. They were so well behaved, and smart and even though they were cold, they did not show it. Thanks also to the Leader and two Scouts from the 9th who laid the wreath on behalf of the Scouts. Well done.

Thank you also everyone who sold poppies in Waitrose on behalf of the British Legion. Members of Active Support, The District Team and the 7th Cubs and the 13th Group members sold poppies Monday to Saturday from 9 am. to 7 pm. each day.

I will circulate the amount collected when British Legion tells me.

Thank you everyone who supported these two important events.

Cenotaph Parade 2017

Southampton City District has been invited by the Mayor of Southampton, to attend the Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph on Sunday 12th November 2017.

All groups and all sections are invited to attend. I appreciate that some groups, traditionally attend their local church and therefore will not be attending. Can I also remind Leaders of Beavers and younger Cubs, that there is quite a lot of standing, and listening and you may feel that this is not appropriate for your section. For those of you who wish to attend, you should meet in Guildhall Square by 1015hrs.

We are at the rear of the parade and you should muster in the square furthest away from the Guildhall and nearest to Above Bar Street. Everyone should be in smart, full uniform.

Could I remind you all that we are on show to the public as this event is well attended so best behaviour is important and it is not appropriate to carry cups of coffee or cans of drink in the parade.

The World Scout Jamboree is a big international camps for 14-18 year olds from across the world – usually about 30 000 or so people attend and from almost every country where there are Scouts. The next WSJ is in 2019 and will be held in North America.

  2. It is vital that you email our DC, with a quick message to say you are applying so that we can support you in your application.

The Hampshire participant selection weekend will be held at Ferny Crofts Scout Activity Centre, over the weekend of 15th – 17th Sept 17. Attendance will be required for the whole weekend.

If you will be 18 or older on that date, you can attend as International Service Team – applications are not open for this yet but you can express an interest

The leaders on their recent Leader selection weekend, made some videos to help promote the WSJ to Scouts and Explorers. These were made on phones, and completed in a very short time scale, so are not 100% polished videos, but can be worth showing – WSJ Leader Selection Videos – There are 6 in total – please make sure you watch through to the end!

How much will the Jamboree cost? The UK Contingent Management Team are currently working on the costings for 2019 and we hope to have this information before the summer. However, as a guide the participant fee for Hampshire units for the last Jamboree in Japan was approximately £3200

What is it like?
Watch this video from the last WSJ in 2015 to get a taste of what it’s all about.

You can contact the Hampshire WSJ team by E-mail to wsj@scouts-hants.org.uk

Please remember to join the Facebook Groups to keep up to date: County Explorers and County Network as applicable.

District Charity – PICU

As I’m sure you are aware, every year the District selects a local charity to raise money for. This year we have chosen the PICU Ward at Southampton Hospital.

We can’t raise funds for a specific item, but whatever we raise will be used to: fund a refurbishment, fund new pieces of equipment, and provide a support service for patients and their families.

The donations from our celebrations (Founders Day, St Georges Day, Wacky Races, Carol Service and Christingle) usually go to the district charity. But wouldn’t it be good if every section/group did a sponsored event – for example:

  • a silence, a bike ride, a run or a swim,
  • a list of jobs to be completed,
  • hair cut,
  • give something up for a time – chocolate, cake, TV, smartphone, Facebook.

The Hospital is providing us with promotional material – which I will hold on to. So please let me know when you need them. I can also provide you with the sponsorship form. I suggest you collect the money in and pass to me when completed. I can then keep a running total of how much we raise over the year. Please note that we will need to give the Hospital the original sponsor sheets so that they can claim the gift-aid.

Thanks in advance for all the hard work and effort I know you’ll put into creating something amazing.
