11th Cubs: Helping to save little lives and the environment

Over the last few weeks the 11th cub scouts have been learning about the charity Kicks Counts and how they can use their rubbish to raise money for them.

Kicks Counts is a charity that was set up in 2009 and aims to reduce the stillbirth and neonatal death rate by raising awareness of baby movements.  How important it is to be aware of movement in the womb.

One of the ways the Charity fundraises is by working with Terracyle.

Terracycle is a recycling company that has specialises in recycling typically hard-to-recycle waste. They offer people the opportunity to be collect certain waste and send it to them to be recycled. All products they collect are not recyclable by our regular council bin collection, so any items sent are saved from going into landfill. Terracycle clean and melt the waste into hard plastic that can be remoulded to make new recycled products.

For example: confectionary wrappers, milk bottle tops, biscuit and cake wrappers, dental products, cat food pouches, bread bags, crisp packets, baby food pouches and stamps.

The cubs collected all their items together in the hall.   This all had to be sorted into categories. So each Six was given an item to collect from the pile – some of these had to be flattened out, others had to checked and cleaned.

Once sorted the items had to be bagged up and taken to the collection point in Millbrook.
